Taking care of your home all year long helps protect its value, prevent surprise repairs (or costs!), and make a great impression. Whether you’re living in it for life or planning to sell someday, don’t defer your home’s maintenance!
As we roll out of Austin’s hottest months knowing our home’s pipes have been working overtime, now is the perfect time to tackle a couple of simple plumbing-related tasks that can help you avoid costly water damage—both now and as we head into the cooler months.
1. Check for Leaks & Prep Pipes
With August water use at its peak, your plumbing system is working hard. Walk through your home and check under sinks, around toilets, and at outdoor faucets for signs of drips, corrosion, or moisture. Small leaks can quietly increase your water bill and lead to bigger issues if ignored.
While you’re at it, take note of any exposed outdoor pipes—especially in garages, crawlspaces, or around the exterior of your home. Adding insulation to these pipes in the fall helps prevent freezing and bursting during sudden cold snaps (yes, even in Austin!).
2. Deep Clean & Inspect Bathroom and Kitchen Caulking
As humidity lingers and we spend more time indoors again, it’s smart to give your bathrooms and kitchen a quick once-over. Look for cracked or peeling caulk around sinks, tubs, showers, and backsplashes.
Gaps in caulking let water seep into places it shouldn’t—leading to mold, mildew, or even hidden structural damage. Fresh caulk is inexpensive, easy to apply yourself, and helps keep your home dry, clean, and damage-free.
Tackling both of these easy maintenance tasks now helps you stay ahead of problems and gives your home a clean, solid start for the fall season.
