Baby, it’s still cold outside — at least by Texas standards 😉
So for January, I’m staying on the warm-and-cozy train with a simple but important home maintenance focus: checking the weatherproofing around your windows and doors.
This is one of those small tasks that’s easy to overlook, but it can make a noticeable difference in both comfort and energy efficiency.
Why Weatherproofing Matters (Even in Austin)
Even during our relatively mild winters, gaps around windows and doors can allow cold air in — which means your heating system has to work harder to keep your home comfortable.
Over time, that can lead to:
- higher energy bills
- uneven temperatures from room to room
- unnecessary strain on your HVAC system
Good weatherproofing helps maintain a more consistent indoor temperature and protects your home’s long-term efficiency.
How to Check Your Weatherproofing
The good news? This is a very DIY-friendly task.
Start by:
- feeling for drafts around doors and windows
- checking weatherstripping for cracks, gaps, or wear
- looking at caulking for areas that may have dried out or pulled away
If you notice issues, weatherstripping and caulk are inexpensive and easy to find at most hardware stores.
DIY or Professional Help — Both Are Okay
If you enjoy small home projects, this is a great one to tackle yourself in an afternoon.
If you’d rather not deal with it, hiring a professional for a quick inspection and update can ensure nothing is missed — especially in older homes.
Either option is a win. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s prevention.
A Small Task That Adds Up
This is one of those maintenance items that doesn’t feel urgent — until it is.
Taking care of weatherproofing now can:
- improve comfort
- lower energy costs
- help your systems last longer
Small, consistent maintenance goes a long way in protecting what you’ve already built.
